Working with the Moon

Tonight's moon

reading the sky…

You don't need to track the sky to love crystals — but the moon is the oldest clock we have, and crystal practice has kept time by it for centuries. Here's how each phase is traditionally used, whether you follow all of them or just wave at the full moon now and then.

🌑 New Moon — plant

The dark of the moon is for beginnings: setting intentions, starting the journal page, choosing what this cycle is for. Hold a stone while you name one thing you're inviting in. Just one. The moon appreciates focus.

🌒 Waxing — build

As the light grows, so does the doing. The waxing weeks are traditionally for momentum — carrying your pocket stones, taking the brave steps, and feeding whatever you planted at the new moon.

🌕 Full Moon — cleanse & charge

The headline event. Set your crystals on a windowsill or outside on the earth overnight and let the moonlight do the housekeeping — it's the one cleansing method safe for every stone we carry, including the sun-shy ones. (The full ritual lives inHow I Cleanse Every Crystal.) Full moons are also for gratitude: look at what grew.

🌘 Waning — release

As the light thins, tradition turns to letting go — old worries, finished seasons, the thing you've been carrying that was never yours to hold. Smoky quartz and obsidian are classic companions for this stretch of the month.

And if you miss a moon: nothing is lost. It's a circle. The moon's whole personality is coming back.
