one more entry, honestly inked
Opalite Joins the Grimoire
One stone went into the Grimoire this week, and it’s the one I’ve been meaning to write up for a while — because writing it properly meant saying the unglamorous thing out loud.
Opalite is glass. Man-made, furnace-born, no locality, no crystal structure, and no ancient lore no matter what the label says — it arrived in the crystal trade in the 1980s. Here’s why I keep it anyway: the particles suspended inside a piece of opalite are sized to sort light by wavelength, bouncing the blues back at you and letting the ambers through. Put it on a dark shelf and it’s a small cool moon. Lift it toward the window and the same piece goes peach. Nothing about it changed except where the light was standing. Somebody made a sunset you can hold, and I’m not going to pretend that’s less interesting than a mountain.
The entry also untangles the name, which does double duty — geologists have used “opalite” for a natural common opal since long before the glass showed up. Two materials, one word, endless confusion at the market table.
Opalite rides along as milky blue tumbles in my Witch’s Brew confetti, so there’s a decent chance one is already sitting on your shelf under a different guess.
